There are numeruos operators in Nova Scotia offering oceanfront cottages for daily, weekly and monthly rental and
many of the most sought after locations are in the South Western portion of the province. The St. Mary's Bay region
of Digby County is one of those areas. Here where the tides are determined by the Bay of Fundy, there are historic
villages and lighthouses, ancient sandstone cliffs, lush green forests and a host of unique cultural events that
clearly separate it from any other vacation destination in the province.
Bay of Fundy Whale Watching
Whale Watching in the nearby Bay of Fundy is an important tourism resource in the region. Brier
and Long Islands, off Digby Neck are among the most prolific whale watching regions in Eastern Canada, attracting
thousands of visitors every year from all over North America and beyond. The picturesque fishing community of
Westport, Brier Island is known as 'The Whale Watching Capital of Nova Scotia'.
The whales, dolphins, seabirds and seals are attracted to large schools of herring and mackerel, which feed on plankton in the Bay of Fundy. As many as eight different species of whales can be observed in the region during the summer months including the Humpback (pictured above), Minke, Finback and the rare Right Whale. There are several companies offering whale watching tours of the Bay of Fundy, among Mariner Cruises Whale and Seabird Tours of Westport, Brier Island.
